Benanti Viticoltori: Dall’Etna dal 1734

Crafting Wines on the Slopes of Mount Etna Since 1734

In the shadow of one of Europe’s most active and iconic volcanoes, Benanti Winery stands as a beacon of Sicilian winemaking tradition, innovation and volcanic identity. With roots tracing back to 1734, and an official re-founding by Giuseppe Benanti in the 1980s, Benanti has become synonymous with Mount Etna’s viticultural renaissance. Nestled on the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, this winery combines a noble family heritage with cutting edge craftsmanship, producing wines that speak of terroir, time and transformation.

A Family Rooted in Etna’s Soil

The Benanti family began cultivating grapes on Mount Etna in the 18th century, but it was Giuseppe Benanti who revitalised the estate in modern times. A pioneer of Etna’s potential, Giuseppe Benanti brought a visionary approach to the region, aiming to showcase the unique qualities of volcanic wines on a global stage. Today, his twin sons, Antonio and Salvino Benanti, continue his legacy with a deep commitment to quality, sustainability and authenticity.

The Vineyards and Volcanic Terroir

Benanti’s vineyards stretch across Etna’s northern, southern and eastern slopes, each offering distinct microclimates and volcanic soil composition that shape the character of their wines. The high altitudes, temperature fluctuations and volcanic ash laden soils contribute to wines of exceptional minerality, elegance and longevity.

The vineyards in Nicolosi, the historic heart of the family estate and CASTIGLIONE DI SICILIA, home to their renowned Contrade vineyards, produce native varietals such as:

  • Carricante (Etna Bianco)
  • Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio (Etna Rosso)

The Wines of Benanti

Benanti’s portfolio is a celebration of Etna’s volcanic character and includes several flagship wines:

  • Pietramarina Etna Bianco Superiore: A benchmark white wine made from old vine Carricante grown in the Milo area, known for its saline minerals and age worthy structure.
  • Rovittello Etna Rosso: A classic blend of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, expressing finesse, red fruit and earthy depth.
  • Serra della Contessa Etna Rosso Riserva: Sourced from century old vines, this Wine offers layered complexity, spice and volcanic essence.

Other labels, including Contrada Wines, reflect the nuances of individual vineyards and plots and showcase Benanti’s commitment to terroir driven winemaking.

The Estate and Architecture

Benanti’s estates blend historical elegance with refined Sicilian aesthetics. At the Nicolosi estate, visitors find themselves surrounded by historic buildings, lush vineyards and the brooding presence of Etna looming in the distance. The winery structures are a harmony of stone, wood and lava reflecting both heritage and resilience.
