Arnaldo Caprai Società Agricola

The Heart of Montefalco and the Legacy of Sagrantino

Nestled in the lush, rolling hills of central Umbria lies one of Italy’s most iconic wine estates, Arnaldo Caprai Società Agricola. Revered for its pioneering role in resurrecting the ancient Sagrantino grape and elevating Montefalco to international wine prestige, the estate is a testament to innovation, tradition and the deep cultural heritage of Umbria.

The Origins: A Visionary Beginning

Founded in 1971 by Arnaldo Caprai, a successful entrepreneur, the winery was born out of a deep passion for the Umbrian land and its untapped potential. Arnaldo saw what few others did at that time, that Montefalco, with its unique terroir and native varietals, had the promise to produce wines of exceptional character. What began as a modest 12.5 hectare vineyard soon evolved into one of Italy’s most respected wine estates.

In 1988, Arnaldo’ son Marco Caprai took over the reins and brought a dynamic, forward thinking approach to winemaking. Under Marco’s leadership, the winery invested heavily in research, sustainability and innovation, while never losing sight of tradition. It was this synergy of old and new that led the foundation for the estate’s global success.

The Revival of Sagrantino

At the heart of Arnaldo Caprai’s legacy is the Sagrantino grape, a native varietal to Montefalco that, for centuries, was used almost exclusively to make sweet, passito style Wine. By the late 20th century, the grape had nearly vanished. Recognising its potential, the Caprai family led a comprehensive project to revive and modernise Sagrantino cultivation, transforming it into a world class dry red wine.

Sagrantino is one of the most tannic grape varieties in the world, known for its deep color, robust structure and exceptional aging potential. The resulting wines are intense, powerful and deeply expressive of the Montefalco terroir.

The Terroir of Montefalco

Montefalco’s terroir is nothing short of extraordinary. The vineyards span gently undulating hills at elevations between 200 and 400 metres, with soils composed of clay, limestone and sand. The Mediterranean-Continental climate, with hot summers and cool nights, provides ideal conditions for slow grape maturation, preserving acidity enhancing complexity. The landscape is rich in biodiversity and history. Olive groves, medieval towns and centuries old churches for the surroundings, creating a timeless atmosphere where agriculture and culture coexist in harmony.
