Alois Lageder

Crafting The Wine Legacy Since 1823 and Into The Future

Nestled in the pristine, sun drenched valleys of Alto Adige (South Tyrol), the Alois Lageder winery represents the epitome of sustainable luxury, winemaking precision and Alpine elegance. For over two centuries, the Lageder family has cultivated not just vines, but a philosophy: to produce wines that are authentic expressions of the terroir, deeply rooted in history and created with a forward thinking, biodynamic vision.

The Legacy: 1823 to the present day: Six Generations of Vision and Vitality

The story of Alois Lageder is one of timeless evolution of family, place and purpose coming together over nearly two centuries. It all began in 1823, when “Johann Lageder”, a wagon maker with a deep appreciation for craftsmanship, began trading wine in Alto Adige. What started as a commerce slowly transformed into commitment, as generations after him bought their own vineyards and began crafting wines that would reflect the land, the climate and the Lageder philosophy. The pivotal chapter came in 1934, when the family acquired the Löwengang Estate in Magrè. It’s more than a home, it’s where tradition and innovation have coexisted ever since. By the 1990s, under the stewardship of their father, a new vision took root. One that wasn’t just about quality but about responsibility. To the earth, to future generations and to the region. He pioneered biodynamic viticulture in the vineyards, long before it became a global movement and set a benchmark that reshaped Alto Adige’s wine making identity.

Today, the sixth generation continues to write the story. Three siblings, one mission. Alois Clemens, Helena Lageder and Anna Lageder oversee the winery operations, communications, the Vineria Paradeis , the culinary destination and brings the winery to life through events including the annual SUMMA trade fair.

The Terroir of Alto Adige: Where Mountains Meet the Vine

Alto Adige, Italy’s northernmost wine region, offers an extraordinary fusion of Mediterranean warmth and Alpine coolness. Vineyards rise from 250 to over 1,000 metres above sea level, with soil ranging from limestone to porphyry and glacial moraine. This diversity is the backbone of Alois Lageder’s complex and site specific wines. The Dolomites provide dramatic scenery and diurnal temperature variation, preserving acidity and aromatic purity in the grapes.

Biodynamic and Beyond: A Visionary Approach

Alois Lageder is not only certified biodynamic (Demeter) but has become a global ambassador of regenerative farming in Wine. The estate covers over 55 hectares of biodynamically farmed vineyards and partners with 80+ grape growers under strict sustainability guidelines.

The Wines of Alois Lageder: A Symphony of Purity and Place

The estate produces a wide range of wines, categorised into distinct tiers:

4.) Masterpieces/Innovations: Limited bottling like “Aequilibrium” and natural wine experiments that push the boundaries of conventional taste.

Architecture & Aesthetic: A Winery Designed by Nature

The Alois Lageder winery is a seamless integration of form and function. The center piece is a gravity flow cellar built into the hillside, using natural temperature regulation. The architecture combines sustainable materials, wood and stone, reflecting Lageder’s reverence for nature. Solar panels, rainwater collection and an aesthetic blending into the landscape make it one of the most innovative winery spaces in Europe. Art and music are integral to the estate’s identity. Their annual “SUMMA” event brings together global winegrowers, musicians, chefs and thinkers transforming the estate into a hub of cultural exchange.

The People: Visionaries Behind the Label

The team includes viticulturists, cellar masters, chefs, vineyard manager, winemaker and more who embrace interdisciplinary collaboration. Their synergy results in wines that are not just products but expressions of philosophy. The estate also champions inclusive labour practices, welcoming global apprentices and maintaining strong relationships with growers who convert to biodynamic farming under Lageder’s mentorship.
