But what makes Altemasi and Trentodoc wines so special ? Let’s take a deep dive into the history, terroir, winemaking and people behind the exquisite bubbles of the mountains.

A Region Built for Sparkling Perfection: Trentino and Trentodoc:

Before we get into Altemasi, it’s important to understand where these wines come from. TRENTINO, a stunning wine region in northern Italy, is famous for its crisp mountain air, mineral rich soils and cool climate. All perfect conditions for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the backbone of great sparkling wines.

This region is home to TRENTODOC, Italy’s first METODO CLASSICO sparkling wine designation (created in 1993). Unlike PROSECCO, Trentodoc wines are made with traditional method, meaning:

  • Secondary fermentation happens in the bottle, just like Champagne
  • Long aging on the less gives complexity, depth and refined bubbles
  • Alpine terroir brings freshness, minerality and structure.

The Story of Altemasi: Precision, Passion and Mountain Elegance. Trentodoc’s shining star:

Altemasi was born with a single goal in mind, to craft world class Metodo Classico sparkling wines that express the true essence of TRENTINO’s high altitude terroir. Located in ROVERETO, in the heart of the region, Altemasi is a symbol of balance between tradition and innovation.

The name “ALTEMASI” translates to “HIGH FARMS”, a reference to the soaring vineyard altitude, some reaching 600 metres (1,970 ft) above sea level. This elevation is key, as it provides:

  • Cool nights and warm days – preserving acidity and freshness
  • Limestone rich soils – Enhancing minerality and structure
  • Slow grape ripening – Creating elegant, complex with vibrant aromas.

The result? Sparkling wines with finesse, fine perlage and remarkable depth.

The Wines of Altemasi: Bubbles with Character

Altemasi produces some of the finest expressions of Trentodoc, focusing primarily on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

  • Altemasi Brut Millesimato: This is the flagship wine, a vintage dated (Millesimato) sparkling that shows off Altemasi’s signature freshness, elegance and refined bubbles. Aged for more than 36 months on lees, it has bright green apple, citrus and toasty almond notes with a crisp, mineral driven finish.
  • Altemasi Riserva Graal: Aged for an impressive 60+ months, this is a prestige cuvée, showcasing the best Chardonnay and Pinot Noir selections from high altitude vineyards. Expect BRIOCHE, honey, white flowers and creamy texture. A bottle that rivals some of Champagne’s finest.
  • Altemasi Rosé Trentodoc: A stunning Pinot Noir dominant ROSÉ, bringing delicate notes of wild strawberries, rose petals and hints of red currants. A perfect balance between fruitiness and structure making it ideal for pairing with food.

The People Behind the Bubbles:

Behind every great wine, there’s a passionate team of winemakers, viticulturists dedicated to perfection. Altemasi’s wines are carefully curated by experts who respect tradition but embrace innovation, ensuring that each bottle reflects the best of the region. The team sources the grapes from hand selected vineyards across Trentino, working closely with local growers who have cultivated these lands for generations. The result? Wines that are not only technically perfect but also full of heart and soul.

Franciacorta

Franciacorta: Italy’s hidden gem:

Situated in the Lombardy region of northern Italy, this picturesque wine territory is home to some of the most exquisite sparkling wines in the world. But Franciacorta isn’t just about wine, it’s a journey through history, culture and the passion of the people who have crafted its reputation over the centuries.

The Charm of Franciacorta:

Unlike its counterpart, Champagne, Franciacorta remains a well kept secret among wine aficionados. The rolling hills, quaint villages and stunning vineyards create a unique backdrop that feels like stepping into a timeless Italian dream. The region offers a perfect blend of charm and refined elegance.

The Magic Behind Franciacorta Wines:

Franciacorta wines are Italy’s answer to premium sparkling wines. Unlike Prosecco, which is made using the tank method, Franciacorta is produced using traditional methods, similar to Champagne. This means the secondary fermentation occurs in the bottle, leading to complex flavours and fine bubbles that create an exceptional drinking experience. Franciacorta wines are made primarily from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with some winemakers also incorporating Pinot Bianco. The wines are aged for a minimum of 18 months, but the finest bottles often undergo longer aging periods, resulting in deep, layered flavours with notes of toasted almonds, citrus and brioche.

The Unique Terroir of Franciacorta:

The magic of Franciacorta wines begins with its terroir. The region’s soils are rich in minerals, thanks to its glacial origins, which contribute to the wine’s distinct character. The climate is another defining factor, the mild temperatures and cool breezes from nearby lake ISEO create the most effective conditions for grape cultivation. The vineyards stretch across gently sloping hills, benefiting from ideal sun exposure that ensures balanced ripeness and acidity in the grapes.

The Pioneers Behind Franciacorta Wines:

Franciacorta wouldn’t be what it is today without the dedicated winemakers who have preserved and perfected their craft. The movement started in the 1960s when winemakers recognized the region’s potential for producing world class sparkling wines. The pioneers of Franciacorta worked tirelessly to implement high quality winemaking standards, eventually earning the region Italy’s first DOCG status for sparkling wines. Each winery in Franciacorta brings its own expertise and vision to the table, but all share the same commitment to quality and authenticity.

Wine Tourism in Franciacorta:

Franciacorta is a dream destination for wine lovers, offering an array of wine tourism experiences that allow visitors to immerse themselves in the winemaking process. Many wineries offer guided tours, where you can stroll through the vineyards, explore historic cellars, and taste some of the finest sparkling wines directly from the source. A visit to Franciacorta isn’t complete without a wine and food pairing experience. The region is known for its rich culinary traditions and pairing a bottle of Franciacorta with lake fish or aged cheese is an unforgettable experience.

Exploring Beyond the Vineyards:

While Franciacorta is primarily known for its wines, the region has so much more to offer. Lake ISEO with its serene waters and charming lakeside towns, provides a perfect escape for nature lovers. The medieval villages of Erbusco, known as the heart of Franciacorta, is another hidden gem worth exploring. Here you will find historic villas, small boutique hotels and quaint cafes where you can soak in the Italian countryside tranquility.

A Tastes of Franciacorta’s Future:

As Franciacorta continues to grow in popularity, its winemakers remain committed to innovation while respecting tradition. Sustainability is at the forefront of their efforts, with many wineries adopting organic and biodynamic farming practices to preserve the land for future generations. Franciacorta’s dedication to quality and its unique sense of place make it a truly special destination.

This philosophy of shared knowledge, combined with a meticulous focus on quality, has shaped the winery’s reputation as one of Alto Adige’s finest. The roots of Cantina Kaltern stretch back over a century, when independent vintners first realised that working together could elevate their wines to new heights. Over the years, the cooperative has not only preserved its traditional winemaking methods but also embraced modern innovations to ensure every bottle reflects the unique terroir of the region.

The Terroir of Alto Adige:

The vineyards sit between 200 and 600 metres above sea level, where the cool mountain breezes meet the warmth of the Mediterranean sun. This striking contrast creates an environment where grapes ripen slowly, developing intense aromas and balanced acidity. The soils here are a mix of limestone, clay and volcanic porphyry, adding layers of complexity to the wines. These natural conditions, combined with the expertise of the winery’s growers, result in wines that are elegant, well structured and full of character.

Cantina Kaltern Wines:

Cantina Kaltern’s wines tell a story. A story of patience, passion and dedication. The winery is best known for its Schiava (Kalterersee), a delicate and vibrant red wine that beautifully expresses the region’s signature varietal. But the offerings go beyond that:

  • Schiava (Kalterersee DOC)- A light fresh red wine with aromas of wild berries.
  • Lagrein- A deeper, more intense red wine with dark fruit flavours and hints of spice.
  • Pinot Bianco and Pinot Grigio- Crisp, mineral driven white wines that reflect the Alpine freshness of the region.
  • Gewürztraminer- A fragrant, full bodied white wine with exotic fruit notes and a touch of spice.
  • Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc- Expressive and elegant, these wines highlight the winery’s expertise in white winemaking.

The People behind the bottle:

The cooperative’s members pour their heart and soul into every vintage, ensuring that each bottle is a testament to their hard work and passion. From vineyard caretakers to cellar masters, every hand that touches the winemaking process plays a vital role in shaping the final product. Cantina Kaltern’s commitment to sustainability is also a reflection of its people. Their philosophy is simple: Great wine starts with great respect for nature, land, tradition and for the people who make it all possible.

A taste of tradition and innovation:

Cantina Kaltern is a winery that beautifully balances tradition with modernity. While it stays true to its deep rooted history and the art of cooperative winemaking, it also embraces innovation ensuring that each bottle reflects the best of Alto Adige.
